Pepe’s Restaurants have continuously served the Southland with fine quality Mexican food. Pepe’s was founded in 1962 by three brothers, Joe, Tony and Fred. Unable to find steady business at first, the location was changed several times before finally settling in Alhambra in 1962, where the name was changed permanently to “Pepe’s.” During these early years, the brothers often relied on the help of family members to keep the business growing. In 1962, their nephew “Pepe” was sent to fight in Vietnam. This is when Tony, out of love for his nephew, renamed the restaurant after him, Pepe's. In the following years, the restaurant had become a great success. However, in 1973 Tony passed away leaving Joe and Fred to run the business solely. While offering exemplary, homemade tasting versions of Vietnamese classics such as the reliably delicious "phở" (rice noodle soup) or "bún" (rice noodle salad bowl), Little Saigon also focus on lesser-known and more unique Vietnamese staples such as "mì quảng" (turmeric noodle soup with shrimp, steamed pork and rice crackers), "bò cuốn lá nho" (grilled beef wrapped in grape leaves) and "gỏi ngó sen tôm thịt" (lotus root salad studded with shrimp, pork and pickled vegetables).
